June found the backcountry around Crested Butte still thawing from a big winter, flooded roads, with spring still struggling to turn into summer. Each day dawned crisp and cold, and I was in the field early in order to get in a few hours of painting before the late spring winds kicked up. Flowers were rare, and the reds and browns of winter stems remained on north and east-facing slopes. After the third day, I just couldn't get into the field early enough, as the winds picked up already at 9AM, blowing my painting block off the easel, so I had to finish the painting within the confines of my parked car.
